The Review: Pacha Clarifying Charcoal Bar Soap

We’re over a quarter of the way through the year now and I’ve seriously fallen off the horse when it comes to the New Year’s resolutions I made at the beginning of 2019..! So far I’m not doing so great for working out regularly, and am failing miserably at resolving to stress/worry less! The one resolution I’ve been faring a little better however was a goal I set for myself this year to live more consciously. No, I don’t mean staying awake later, but more so trying to make more environmentally-conscious decisions about the impact of the products I buy and use! In the spirit of Earth Day (which was just last week) and full of Spring inspo for fresh beginnings, this month I wanted to turn the spotlight over to a newer brand to, Pacha Soap, and another awesome product of theirs that I’ve been using, the Clarifying Charcoal Soap.

Pacha Soap Co

As a bit of an introduction, Pacha Soap Co. is a small company based out of Hastings, Nebraska that was created with the goal to help start social enterprises in developing nations around the world while producing all-natural, environmentally safe and artfully crafted bath products. Pacha is passionate about responsible ingredient sourcing and its environmental impact. Their products are all hand-crafted with premium organic plant oils, fragranced with all-natural essential oils and even coloured with natural mineral pigments instead of dyes. With this in mind, their bar soaps are gorgeous and look like something you would typically get at an overpriced boutique. They are also completely free of parabens, sulphates, SLS and certified cruelty free. Proceeds from sales of their products are used towards supporting clean water initiatives and hygiene education for healthier communities around the world, so you can truly feel good about purchasing their products!

Clarifying Charcoal Bar Soap

As mentioned, I tried out Pacha’s Clarifying Charcoal soap, and I’ll be totally honest that my reasons for picking this particular soap were more about its looks than its substance (although it’s definitely not lacking in that either), because this soap looks like it could be a work of art. Looks aside, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this soap because I have been very slow to join the charcoal trend in beauty products and full-disclosure I really did think it was just another silly instagram beauty fad.

After doing a little research though, it seems that there are some legitimate health benefits to incorporating activated charcoal into your beauty regimen. Activated charcoal powder is known to detoxify and cleanse naturally by acting like a magnet to help draw out dirt and impurities impurities from our skin while remaining very gentle and non-abrasive. Activated charcoal also has antibacterial properties to also help combating bacteria or infection which makes it a great skincare ingredient if you are prone to acne and breakouts. Concentrated charcoal products can be drying to sensitive skin, however the Pacha charcoal soap is also made with coconut oil and shea butter to help keep your skin hydrated while the charcoal does its cleansing and detoxifying thing!

Essential Oils

A downside I’ve noticed when using any natural cleansers/body washes/shampoos/etc is that they don’t seem to lather as well as the typical less-than-natural products. This is because many mass-produced-big-name-brands use lots of chemical emulsifiers and silicone in their formulas to help create a richer lather. Without a good lather I often feel I need to use more product in order to fully cleanse my skin or hair properly. Despite it’s chemical-free ingredients I was very pleasantly surprised to find I could still get a very rich lather from this bar of soap, and it seems to last a long time too! Several weeks of washes later my bar of soap has barely shrunken. I didn’t know what I was expecting charcoal soap to smell like (a campfire maybe?!) but this soap is scented actually with lemongrass and peppermint essential oils which give it a really subtle but fresh smell! It not a particularly floral or feminine scent so I could easily see the whole family enjoying using this soap, although because it’s so pretty I wouldn’t blame anyone wanting to hoard it away for themselves.

Facial Cleansing

Lastly a really nice aspect of this soap I found was that because it’s so hydrating and gentle you can easily use it as a facial cleanser as well! I would typically never use a bar soap on my face since cream-based soaps can be super drying to too heavily fragranced for sensitive skin. But, being an oil based soap with such gentle ingredients, I found it just as gentle and effective for washing my face as most liquid facial cleansers I’ve used! SO you’re actually saving quite a bit as well using a long-lasting bar soap in place of a body wash and cleanser/makeup removing wipes and without contributing any waste from packaging!

If you’re looking for some new easy ways to help do right by the planet without compromising on efficacy, and if you want something to add a little beauty to you bathroom without creating unnecessary waste while ALSO supporting a compassionate company and brand, try out one of Pacha’s gorgeous products!

This product does sink pipes no favor, so remove the product with moist paper towels first. Then wash your face. I wish this advice was given on the jar.
