5 Tips for Going Back to School as an Adult
Completely changing the direction of your life, wiping the slate clean, and starting over can be an exhilarating yet terrifying experience. It means completely jumping out of your comfort zone and getting used to feeling entirely out of your depth in almost every new situation. What I didn’t realize when I first decided to embark on the journey of going to medical school, is that it would also mean that I would have to go back to high school in order to proceed with what I wanted to do. High school! At the time high school was over ten years ago for me, and I assumed that the day I graduated was the last day I would ever have to see the inside of that institution. The last thing I wanted to do to move forward was to have to take ten steps backward first.
So You Wanna Start Running
Runners are so fit! So lean! So motivated! But where do you begin?! The last time you tried going for a jog, you made it a block before you either:
a) got a painful, awful, ruthless cramp
b) had to bend over while gasping for breath
c) had to start walking and hoped that anyone who was watching you assumed you were at the tail end of your easy-peasy 15 km run and were deservedly 'cooling down'.

The Importance of Staying Positive
Coming from a rough upbringing, what I've picked up is that keeping a positive mental attitude is very important in life. Life is full of ups and downs, struggles, and unexpected events. We all have these moments, it’s a part of being human! Sometimes we feel that we are trapped in a situation we think we can’t handle. We, as humans, are a lot stronger than we think. Looking back at life I've been in situations where I wanted to escape life because I didn't think I could handle it, or I felt that I’d had enough. Now I wish I could go back to that time and tell myself that “ it’s going to be okay ” and that time will pass and make me stronger both emotionally and mentally.
A Love-Hate Relationship
I have a love-hate relationship with exercise. I love the way exercise makes me feel. Exercise makes me feel good. I feel strong and energized. I feel accomplished and empowered. I love to sweat it out and push myself to be stronger, go harder and go one step further than my body says I can. The thing I hate about exercise is the part where I actually have to get up and do it. I hate that I have to exercise! I know that sounds strange because I don't mind exercising. But the thing I find most difficult is motivating myself to actually get started. There was a time in my life that I didn't have to worry about exercising. (I miss those days!) I was young, had a fast metabolism and a very physical job.
