Beauty Buzzwords: Hyaluronic Acid
This month’s beauty buzzword is Hyaluronic Acid! I am personally quite excited to write about this as it’s completely new to me. I’ve seen the word about but, honestly, I’m not sure what it is or what it does! On first impressions, I thought this was quite a harsh ingredient and something that should be used on your skin sparingly. It was time for some research.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a substance in beauty products responsible for moisturizing and hydrating the skin. I’ll be the first to admit that the name is quite misleading, as at a first glance the term ‘acid’ had me thinking this would strip my skin of something, rather than replenish it. Like any great moisturizer, the results are exactly what our tired faces dream of. Moisturizing our skin gives us a lovely, youthful glow, and the plumping effect reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. What’s not to love?
How's it different?
So, here’s the difference between Hyaluronic Acid and our regular moisturizers. On the surface, both moisturize, however, while moisturizers add moisture, Hyaluronic Acid prevents moisture loss. Get it? The difference is marginal, but nonetheless important. Whilst moisturizing is an integral part of your daily beauty routine, you may want to consider swapping your go-to moisturizer, to a skin care routine with Hyaluronic Acid.
How can I use it?
I don’t (actually, would never), recommend ditching your moisturizer, so if the above appeals to you, (but you don’t want to jump straight on the trend), incorporate it! Hyaluronic Acid is especially effective for those that feel they need an extra boost of moisture. Perfect candidates are those who have ageing skin or feel that their complexion is dull. Additionally, if you are prone to breakouts or acne (me during the colder months!), Hyaluronic Acid can be beneficial in helping to prevent this as it can maintain your moisture levels through its ability to prevent water loss.
What other benefits does it have?
And, if it’s not already apparent, I love a product that has multiple benefits! There’s honestly nothing more satisfying to me than something that can be used on both your skin and hair – I’m sad I know! Dermatologist Dr Paradi makes the comparison of Hyaluronic Acid being like ‘fertilizer’ for the hair, due to the fact it promotes hair growth from the scalp and encourages your actual hair to become thicker. Anyone else need more convincing??
Where can I get it?
You don’t need to be a beauty guru to incorporate this into your regime. The brilliant news is, that if a product includes Hyaluronic Acid, you can bet your pocket money that the branding will be screaming it! This substance is officially the cool kid of the beauty world right now and it's usually available in cleansers, toners, serums, moisturizers and treatments. And if you didn’t already know about it, now you have the inside scoop. We’re late to the Hyaluronic Acid party, but we’re here nonetheless – I’ll have what she’s having!
